Lent is a season of preparation towards transformation. Mysticism is a lineage that offers us examples of how we well prepare ourselves – body, mind and spirit – for the kind of transformation that is necessary for ourselves and for the world. Meditation and contemplation, a core dimension of the mystic life, is not about the retreat from the world, into prayer, but, ultimately, it is about the return.

Prayer and the practice of sitting with the presence of the Divine is meant to prepare and equip us to be able to return to the world and do what is needed to serve our communities and wider world.

During this day of retreat we will explore the lessons and wisdoms found in the life of the Spanish mystic Teresa de Avila. She offers us much to reflect on based on her own life story, her moments of fracture and fragmentation, her deep relationship and visceral experience of God, and her return to the work she felt called to do in and for the world.

She is a figure that many have heard of but, through this day together, we will dive deeper into her life and her spirituality – in its beauty and imperfection – to find ingredients that can serve us in our own life and calling in the world.
