“Let us live together in peace and love in a Beloved Community.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

In his book, Healing the Heart of Democracy, Parker Palmer describes five “Habits of the Heart.”

-We are all in this together
-An appreciation of the value of “otherness”
-A capacity to hold tension in life-giving ways
-Developing a sense of personal voice and agency
-The capacity to create community

The beloved community is both a hope for the future and a call for present transformation. Our current season of unsettledness and polarization urges us to explore such transformation more deeply. How can faith communities become more truly an expression of Beloved Community? These Habits of the Heart, developed through practice, can help us stand in the gap between “what is” and “what could be” with faith and hope.

This retreat is rooted in the respectful practices and deep listening skills of Courage to Lead work. Through presentation, silence, listening, individual reflection, small group sharing, and creative processing, we will explore these five habits of the heart in relation to both personal and community life.
