Offering a 5 day backpacking trip to Zion National Park aimed at connecting clergy (and spouses are welcome as well!), being renewed by the outdoors and some adventure, and learning and praying together.

For this offering, the Rev. Jonathan Malone and I, who trained together at NOLS this April and May and are both Wilderness First Responders, would like to offer a trip to Zion National Park May 14-20. We would likely fly to Las Vegas the evening of the 14th and aim to hit the trails on the morning of the 15th, returning on the 20th.

This trip will likely cover around 5-6 miles a day with hopefully 2 nights of base camping (not moving our stuff!).

Gear that we have to share: backpacks, camping stoves, 0 degree sleeping bags and insulated sleep pads, trowels (for potty usage), and water reservoirs.

We are more than happy to advise as to remaining gear- it will likely be cold at night and warm enough during the day, but we will provide a gear list and talk through recommendations.  We will cover all food planning and acquisitions.

Jonathan will offer spiritual direction pre- and post- trip and we will offer a group planning meeting via zoom and individual follow ups to your satisfaction.

We can expect to pray the daily office, each to read a volume on the area and the culture to share during our trip with one another.  We will also be grateful for feedback before and after so that we can hopefully connect others with what has been very life-giving for us.

If you are interested/available, here’s the expectations:

  1. Let Mike know (and if you are on the fence or find this email woefully inadequate, let me know and happy to talk through any or all of it!)
  2. Be willing to cover your airfare to and from Las Vegas (last time we went, it was under $200 round trip)
  3. Send Mike a $250 deposit to help with food costs and incidentals.   (#2 and #3 represent the total cost of the trip outside of the gear that you need- like sturdy shoes, a water-proof shell, etc).  This can be made to St Thomas with “wilderness renewal” in the memo or done via paypal at with an email giving me a heads up so I can make sure our bookkeeper properly assigns?
  4. Fill out a quick info at
  5. Start walking! An extra 40-50 pounds on your back can really add up fast. I do not practice pack hiking before trips, but it is not a bad idea.  I find jogging and cross-training enough, but I also find that the first day is tiring!

We are still firming up the exact route, having just hiked Zion together in early November. We are pretty content with the weather and water in the canyons and lack of bugs! And then there is the scenery!
