The following is the transcript of the Presiding Bishop’s Christmas message.

Christmas Message 2015

Hello. Our original plan was for me to tape a Christmas message in front of the United Nations building in New York as a way of sending a message that this Jesus of Nazareth whom we follow came to show us the way to a different world, a world rounded in God’s peace and God’s justice, God’s love and God’s compassion.

I recently had surgery and so we had to change those plans and so I’m here in Raleigh on Capitol Square. Christ Church is here and we’re filming this message here just as a way of giving me a chance to say “Thank you” to all of you who sent cards and prayers in my recent surgery.  I’m doing well and I’m coming back to work.

But I did want to say something to you.  It occurs to me that this Jesus of Nazareth really does make a difference.  And God coming into the world in the person of Jesus matters profoundly for all of us regardless of our religious tradition.

In the park across from the United Nations, the Ralph Bunche Park, the words of the Prophet Isaiah are quoted,

They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks
Nation will not rise against nation
Neither shall they learn war any more

What’s not there is another part of that passage that’s in the second chapter of Isaiah, and it says,

Come, let us go to the mountain of God,
That he may show us His ways and teach us His paths

We who follow Jesus believe that the mountain came to us when God came among us in the person of Jesus to show us the way to live, to show us the way to love, to show us the way to transform this world from the nightmare it often is into the dream that God intends for us all.

So, as the words were spoken on that night when Jesus was born, peace, good will to all people, God bless you, God keep you.  A blessed Advent, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to all.

The Most Rev. Michael Curry
Presiding Bishop and Primate
The Episcopal Church

Thanks for this and continued prayers for health and well being. Is there some way to make the video so that it does not automatically go onto the next one. I want to use the link but don’t want any other videos but the Christmas message. Thanks

My dear brother Michael, it is so wonderful to see you if only on video. It gives greater understanding to the power of prayer. Thank you again for your message of hope, and your challenge to the call, God bless you and Merry Christmas, in His love and mine,

  4. Katherine Johnson says:

What a beautiful way to state this message: “the Mountain came to us.” Thanks, Most Reverend Michael. May you continue to recover your health and preach the word that will send us forth.

Thanks Presiding Bishop Michael, for this wonderful Christmas message. It is a blessing to hear! You remain in my prayers. Wishing you and your family, CHRISTMAS JOY AND A BLESSED NEW YEAR!

  8. Hale Anderson says:

It is so heartwarming to know your surgery went well, Bishop Curry. Your Christmas message, however, misses the mark entirely. It no longer serves anyone anywhere to voice the standard line: “God coming into the world in the person of Jesus matters profoundly for all of us regardless of our religious tradition.” Christ was a non-violent revolutionary who lived and worked in the trenches where social injustice crushed the lives of so many. It is the details of our lives today that are so dire, world-wide suffering, and all of that, none of it will go away by skating over the top on a jet stream. We have choices to make, and must climb aboard the moral arc that insists our very actions are meant to create safe and sacred places for all.

  9. Stewart David Wigdor says:

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope it is magical for each person. I think the word magic comes from the title Magi who brought the first Christmas gifts to Jesus. Let wisdom be the gift on this holiday to our President, our Church and those who seek to know God and us who desire to love God.

  10. Dr. Erna Lund says:

Ditto to Hale Anderson’s message–and Yes unequivocallly we all join in the blessed recovery for PB Curry and family–Praise the Lord–and with the Blessings of this Holy Season of Celebration of the Birth of our Dear Savior Jesus Christ. I too must add that in this new year– a turning point/tipping point– that we are all challenged to compassionate action the Way of the Lord. We are surrounded by racial prejudice, hate, vindictive rhetoric and actions–here in our USA–we do not need to point fingers to other parts of the world,i.e.Iran,European countries … and recalling an interfaith exhibit on Israel here in Seattle I inquired of the presenter of how Jesus is regarded and was informed, “Jesus was a misguided Palestinian Jew.” Thus our ecumenical, evangelical, episcopal efforts continue to proceed “in the Way of our Lord Jesus…” One may also reference the scriptures of the dialogue between Jesus and his Jewish community thusly in John 8:18-59.

  11. Susan Kuhn says:

It was glorious to see you at the UBE event prior to your Installation. I pray for your full recovery. And am grateful that you are showing up online. Godspeed.
